Wont Start!!
My 82 F.I. Spider has an issue. The car has been ultra dependable, but I went out to start it today and it will not fire .I last drove it about 2 weeks ago,and it ran perfectly. The fuel pump is on,and I have fuel pumping through the lines. It is turning over normally with the key. There doesnt seem to be any spark throuh the coil wire.It is a new coil and ign. module, but I have run the car several times since changing them.Where to start with troubleshooting this? It has been very cold and it was a little slow turning over at first, but after a couple revolutions it seemed back to normal.Any suggestions or feedback is as always appreciated.

Hey Dave
I had to come in as it is cold and starting to snow.No real heat in the garage.I will start by pulling the cap and checking p/u wires. It is odd that last drive the car started and ran great.I did check that the p/u was plugged into the module tightly.

An '82 whith starting issues? I can't believe it. But it's Craig, so it must be true.
Do you have 12V on the pink wire off the ign. switch to the coil?

What ever you do, don't start an open fire in your garage for heat -- especially since your fuel pump is running!

Re: Wont Start!!
Yeah,I have been through that before!! My only heat in there is a wood stove, not exactly an open flame but not a good mix w/ fuel under pressure. Both my multimeters have dead batteries,so I cant even do basic troubleshooting.I will try to get out there today or tomorrow and check for power to the coil, and mag. p/u.A friend said check the new coil as he has had them go bad out of the box.I was complaining yesterday about being bored and not really having anything to do on the car. Be careful what you wish for!!!

Re: Wont Start!!
UPDATE: It now have a working multimeter, and spent a little time in the garage.I do have 12 volts at the pink wire going in to the coil. The motor spins fine and the f.i. system is operating. When I pull the coil wire off the dizzy and crank the motor,I do not have any spark showing in the coil wire.I removed my new coil and put the original in,no difference. It seems there is no spark getting to the dizz.Where do I look next(module, condensor)????

Re: Wont Start!!
did ya check the wires to the pick up wheel under the rotor? The vac advance makes these wires flex, and sometimes break.

Re: Wont Start!!
As I understand it (I'm not as educated on the electronic ignition as I've been forced to be on the FI system), it could be the control module. It is what turns the primary voltage on and off, which is what is needed to produce the secondary voltage to go out the coil to the dist.
I just got back from a little drive in mine, I got nervous when I got to thinking about yours not starting.

Re: Wont Start!!
Dave ,I did a visual inspection of the p/u wires and rotor and they looked ok.I didnt get to spend much time out there today, but I am going to pull them out to check the entire dizz.It seems that I dont have any power even making it to the cap? I pull the coil wire off the cap and turn the motor over and there doesnt seem to be any spark.I am hoping it is simple and not something in the switch/double relay system. I'm not very good with electronic issues!
Ron,that is my next suspect(control module).I have the one that was working fine when I removed it to put in the aftermaket part.It was supposed to be a higher perf. upgrade though I honestly couldnt feel much,if any, difference. The weather here has been cold ,snowy, icy, generally crappy so I wasnt gonna be driving much any way!

Re: Wont Start!!
It shouldn't be anything in the switch or dual relay. The switch sends the 12v through the pink wire, and it's OK. The dual relay is sending power to the fuel pump, so it should be OK. The power not coming out of the coil is, I'm pretty sure, because the primary voltage is not getting boosted into secondary voltage. That happens when the magnetic field collapses from the primary voltage and that is controlled by the module. Like an on/off switch.
At least, this is how I understand it. But I could be barking up the wrong tree.

Re: Wont Start!!
I'll divulge a little secret test here, but it's gotta be kept quiet. If you have an electric solder gun with a trigger, you can test the module. With the key on, hold the tips of the solder gun over the module and pull the trigger. If the module is good you will get spark from the coil. The solder gun uses the magnetic field to generate current through the module, bypassing the pickup coil.
Have you tested the coil wire to make sure it's good?

Re: Wont Start!!
Good info Mark! That goes into my booklet of tips not found in the manuals.
Also, wouldn't it be a pisser if it is a bad coil wire? So often the simple things are the ones we don't think of.

Re: Wont Start!!
Didnt even consider the coil wire I do have a spare so I will try that.I am not good w/ wiring diagrams, but what I gathered is what Ron says,re..the double relay.I do have power to the coil and fuel pump.I do not have a solder gun(put it in the list),but I do have a working ign. control module ,I will put it on and try that.

Re: Wont Start!!
That pickup coil wire could still be bad inside the white sheath. Mine looked fine until I started pinching it in different places and found where the wires were broken inside.
Craig, you better hurry up and get that car fixed! The Moonshine Rally is less than 5 months away.
