FI glitch
FI glitch
Hey guys with FI's. I need a quick fix or some wise info short of a full pull down at this time that will send me in the right direction for one injector that stopped working. All worked when I first started it up. The little stinker was setting for a while and then it just began to miss. Got fire to the plug. Any suggestions? Thanks Emo.

Are you saying that you have one injector that's not pulsing? Do you have a noid light? First step would be to verify that the injector(s) are getting signal. A noid light is the easiest tool to use and easier to see than a volt meter. The signal is so quick and weak that it may be hard to discern with the meter. If you have signal to the injector but it's not working, it's either plugged or failed. Pull the suspect injector, point it into a glass jar and crank the engine to see if you're getting a good spray. You don't want a stream and you definately don't want a dribble. If it's a bad injector, they can be cleaned/repaired fairly reasonably. "Kristoj" has a good source for this, I can't remember the name of the outfit.

Not sure if your fix will be this easy, but the same thing happened to my spider. The injector wire pigtail came loose just a bit but it was enough where the injector would not fire.

I agree with Ron, you first have to ensure your injector is getting an electrical pulse signal. Any test light will help you determine this, but Ron is right that the light will be dim and pulse quickly, you may want to do the test in a darker garage or after dusk. If the injector in question is getting power and is just clogged, you can inexpensively send it out for cleaning (something I would suggest for all four of your injectors anyway). I have had good luck with these guys: http://www.witchhunter.com/.
However, if the coil in your injector has gone bad, there is no way to fix it. In this case, I would try to source a used injector. The injectors used in our Fiats are also used in other vehicles with Bosch L-Jetronic and are known to be pretty robust, so finding a good used one is not too challenging.
Given that these injectors are not high failure items, my guess is that your issue may be a short in the wiring, or more likely, a loose or bad connector. You can source FI pigtail connectors from IAP or other Fiat vendors.
Let us know how you make out.

Re: FI glitch
if it happened after sitting, the injector is probably stuck. Fuel turns to varnish after a while and recently I've seen lots of stuck injectors. It may have something to do with the current changes to the fuel we get
Re: FI glitch
Can't thank you guys enough for the info. Next step is get a noid light and test the pulse. Then a good cleaning. Still runs damm hot with three. Four will be much better. Hope all will have a great New Year. Emo.
Re: FI glitch
The info paid off. Put some Lucas FI cleaner thru the system and I think it helped. Running smoother now. Hitting on all four now. Hope it stays that way. Thanks again, Emo.
