Unfreezing Windshield Wipers

Post by fiasco »

Ok - I got under the cowl and found the linkages all frozen. The motor runs with the linkages unhooked from the motor, so I'm feeling good about that.

I put some oil on all the places where the linkages connect together and was able to get everything moving, but it is still very hard to move, and I don't think that little motor will be able to make them go. My question is, is there any way to take apart the assemblies where the shafts poke through the cowl? Those connections in particular look really gunked up and probably need to be cleaned, then lubed, to move freely, however, I can't see how to disassemble them.

Here's pics of the shaft assembly that I'm talking about:

Thanks!

Steve,

When this happen to my Spider, - I removed the cowl, de-greased all the parts and linkages, then used a high pressure water cleaner to clean everything down.

Then after things had dried and used a silicone based lubricant on all the moving parts, 12 months they're still working fine.

Very bad paint job. I'm gonna do a full repaint when I am done with the rest of my first round of stuff.

i use LOTS of PB-Blaster or WD40, alternating with a propane torch (careful for the flames).

that, and some less-than-gentle persuasion from a pair of pliers.

o k seubanks, i have the linkage completely apart now. the problem is obvious. the two main shafts that go through the cowl rust inside, causing it to slow or lock up. i am sandblasting the shafts, and will lube and reassemble. i would think the wipers would be pretty fast now.

Rey,

Were you able to get a set working? I kept spraying oil on mine and got them moving a little more freely, but when I put them back on, they're still too sticky for the motor to move them.
