Unfortunately, with the pace of life and weather, I have been unable to spend any appreciable amount of time diagnosing the problem any more. I think that I can rule out the atmospheric conditions as being the source of this one. Once it happened to check to see if this was something on-going, I turned off the car and a few seconds later turned it back on and the performance was back to "normal". So I don't think conditions changed significantly in the brief period of time between the positive improvement and the return to normalcy. Thank you for suggestions though and I welcome all theories.

Yes. If it changed that quick it certainly was not atmospheric. ... :? J.D.

I'd suspect some sort of fuel air mixture problem too first, but just another guess... Maybe try replacing the spark plug wires while your at it. They can leak and get old and bad sometimes too occasionally working fine and then not or vice versa at the wierdest times.
