Hi all,
Im going to be doing some interior work including replacing the carpets on my 78. The carpets were already replaced when i got it with random sized ill fitting rectanglesqe pieces. Does anyone have the proper dimensions and placement for the carpet pieces?
I can usually find the answers for everything i need already somewhere on here, but not this. You guys have all been a huge help to me with out even knowing it. So i thought id give a big thanks for everything ive already gleaned from the forum. Thanks to all the people asking the questions and especially to all those who have the answers and patiently post them.

Re: Carpet dimensions
Hello Yourname,
It will be hard to give dimensions on the carpet since they are shaped to fit in the floorboard with several curves. Also, I don't know if there's a difference between year models but on my early cars, the front carpet only goes on the flat part of the floorboard and a rubber mat goes halfway on the flat surface and up on the firewall. Then, the side pieces have more curves to fit the rocker and are cut to fit under the map pockets. It would be best if someone had a worn out set for you to use as a template or if you bought a set already made from one of our vendors. There are 10 pieces for the front and back if I remember correctly.

Re: Carpet dimensions
Thanks for the info. Im hoping not to spend the money on a retail kit, and save it for other parts. However, that may just be what I need to do in order to make it look good.

Re: Carpet dimensions
I am satisfied with indoor/outdor carpet purchased at Lowe's and Home Depot. I installed it in two cars, the first was done 5 years ago and still look pretty good. It costs about $30 for enought to do the entire car. It cuts real easy with a utility knife. The longest pieces are the outside tunnels below the doors. After making ruff cuts to begin cut it to fit as you go.
I was pleasently surprised how easy a job it actually was and it looks pretty good.

I used Indoor-outdoor carpet also. I used the bubble insulation, secured it with a hot-glue gun. The carpet was solid-backed, and used glue gun to secure it to insulation. Two years and still good! You need good quality scissors and some experimentation.

Re: Carpet dimensions
I used that big box store carpet, also very pleased with the results. I think a 6 foot wide by 12 foot long piece should do the entire car, plus a little extra if you want to pimp out the trunk. Plan it out so the looped rows all run in the same direction when installed.
I did manage to find some wool insulation at a carpet store that was close to the original style without the black facing. I think the insulation cost more than the carpet, but really quiets the interior. If you want to add more insulation in places that the original wasn't then you will need to custom cut the carpet to cover it unless you like to see exposed insulation.
I have two original carpet sets, one beige and one charcoal grey/black. If they are shampooed they will look really nice. send me an e-mail if interested. matt.scarton@gmail.com

Re: Carpet dimensions
I thought that the samples of kit carpet (from a catalogue supplier) were really thin, too thin. so i used boat carpeting, and traced my original carpet to get the pattern.
but, not having the original...that should not deter you. the main thing to achieve is to get it to lay down across all of the various bumps and ridges w/out showing the floor beneath.
be sure to get a good sound deadening material for underneath, regardless of what you choose for the carpet material.

I took my original carpets to a local interior trim shop to have vinyl sewn to the edges. It looks like the original.

Re: Carpet dimensions
I ordered a set from http://www.stockinteriors.com Much less than Bruce's or IAP, lots of color choices for us non-stock types. They were sent directly to my body shop guy, I will hear from him soon as they arrived today. Their samples looked fine, I got about 5 or 6 colors to look at, which I recommend since they were quite different from my screen display. Quick turnaround also, it was a week from when I ordered them to their arrival, and that was over Thanksgiving. $214.90 delivered.
If you're interested, I'll let you know how they turned out.
