Need help...Starter I.D.??

Post by fiatsaver »

I have been through a few Spider parts cars and have 2 extra starters.I have read in another post that the smoke coming from my starter(Hard to start) could indicate the windings were going bad,I did adjust timing and the engine did turn more freely. One of the starters is 9 1/2" and the other overall length is 11"-Which is the same size as the one on it.Will either starters work? The engine has been rebuilt has high comp pistons, carb, with literally no miles and has a 5 speed.Any ideas?
Thank you, Ray

all of the Spider starters will interchange. With a high comp engine you might consider one of the new gear reduction starters; they have a higher cranking rpm, weigh only half the weight of the original units

You may want to check the brushes, when they get oil soaked they will cause slow starting. Any good local alternator/starter rebuilder should be able to check it out, clean it, and if necessary install new brushes for under $30.
