Pulling the Motor out of the Spider

Post by GOPAPA »

Hey Gang,,,I have pulled a couple engines out of old Chevy Trucks and this is what I usually do:: Unbolt the flywheel from the torque conveter, I take the bell housing bolts out, support the front of the tranny (with a jack, and blocks ), then I get the weight off the motor mounts slightly, pull the motor forward until it's free of the tranny, then hoist it out .

As you all know ,,I am new to these Spiders and can always use some insight to the do's and don't so if you have any corrections to make on what you would do to pull the engine and leave the tranny in ..??? Was Wondering about the steering box ,,does it have to come off to get the engine out ?? I thought I read something about this on a archive thread that I came across some weeks back ..

I should have no problems with room as I have taken out the radiator along with the Electric fan too. LD

That covers a lot ,,but I just thought some one might of taken some of these engines out and found out that what they should of taken loose,, before they had the engine all loose ,,, that it wouldn't come up out the engine bay with the sway bar still hooked up (EXAMPLE) or what ever,, that might save me some time underneath the Car on the wet ground that we have here in the northwest ..LOL I will read your list again thought Tappy and look for anything that will help me out .. .......thx LD

Also I might add ,,we have no Greyhound stations around here and the closest is like 65 miles away so I guess it's UPS shipping or post office .. my zip for shipping will be 98632 Longview Washington ..

I've always pulled the engine and tranny together and had to remove the centerlink. I don't know if that's necessary for just an engine r&r. Just make sure you unplug the silly starter before pulling the engine. For some reason, I always forget that. :?

I remove the engine and tranny together also. Just assumed it easier than trying to get to the top bellhousing bolts. I have been removing the shift lever from the tranny. I will be removing an engine soon and this time I plan to remove center console and remove entire shift assembly from the top of the tranny. I think this will reduce the angle required to tilt the engine/and tranny for removal.

I agree with pulling the engine with the tranny attached. My friend and I pulled one without the tranny and the bell housing bolts were a "B", not to forget what a tight spot for the starter bolts. A very long extension and swivel socket. Everything esle was a breeze to take loose, exhaust, hoses and wiring. Had a tough time getting off of the bell housing pins and the pilot bearing. A lot of corrosion. It took a big pry bar and some #%%#$%^%$# but it will come. Next time the tranny comes with the engine.
