Engine Stalls Once Hot

Post by Leonaise »

Hi all. My 1975 124 starts up fine and I've never had any real issues. Now, all of sudden, after driving a few miles (beyond simply just warmed up) the engine stalls and I cannot restart it again until it cools down. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it sputters then dies, I would start at fuel.
If it cuts out suddenly, I would suspect electrical.

When it dies, I would look down the carburetor and look for fuel squirting when you go full throttle. Also, check for spark when you try to start.

Then go down the appropriate troubleshooting path.

Thanks Wizard. After going down the rabbit hole of possible issues, it could be countless ignition, cooling system, or fuel issues. I think it best to bring it to a mechanic.

Just a guess here, but if you have the stock ignition system, a 1975 spider would have had the infamous dual points ignition system (one for starting and cold running, and one for warmed up running). If the warm running set of points are not adjusted properly, or not working at all, the engine would start and run OK until it warmed up, and then stall.
