Valve cover gaskets leak

Post by Anbele »

So I replaced the gaskets not long ago cuz I thought they were the cause of my leak—-primarily on the side where the valve cap is, around that area. (Replaced the rubber valve cap gasket as well). Still got some leaking…tighten the Allen bolts. Enough that I’m sure they’re compressing the new gaskets…still got some leaking. The gaskets are cork by the way. So, am I suppose to install them with gasket sealer? Thought that by just having them snugged enough in there it should suffice.

Hi,
Cork gasket don’t really need sealer.
Some engine oil on both side and tightening the Allen bolt according to the spec will work fine.

When you take the cam covers off, verify they are on plane for the top of the head and the covers. If you have an uneven surface or a small section that was dropped hit with a tool or something else, then the cork gasket should be more than enough to seal. But you never really know until you verify the surfaces are flat. If for some reason a surface is not flat prohibiting a seal or creating a gap, then maybe a little bit of RTV. However, a little goes a long way and this is not stuff you want getting into your system.

I had the same problem. If you can identify where the gasket is leaking, a little smear of RTV should do the trick. At least it did for me. The other thing to check is the oil cap. I had a brand new cap, and it seemed to leak. What I discovered was that I couldn't twist it as far it would go.There is a sweet spot, slightly before mine stops; you can feel the resistance. This took care of my leaky cap.

Don't see it in the shop manual anywhere, but what's the torque value for the Allen head cam cover bolts?
