Pre-pump Fuel filter

Post by Dreroman »

I am going to replace my fuel pump and filter. I notice that some vendors recommend installing a pre-pump filter if you have an old fuel tank. I was wondering if this was really necessary. Also, if you it is needed, how/where does it get installed? Does any one have an opinion?
Thanks!

When I bought my 80 it was a non runner. When I pulled the fuel pump and banged the outlet on my bench it spewed gobs of rust particles. I replaced the pump, filter, all steel and rubber lines, had the tank boiled and lined. I put a clear, coarse mesh strainer in the fuel line on the tank side. After several fill ups I could see rust in the strainer which I believe came from the gas stations as it didn't happen right away. I feel it's necessary and a no brainer to have the pump protected.

Thanks for the input. I think I will go that route. Any insight on where to put the pre-pump filter?
