I've been looking at pictures of a car that doesn't have any hood frame at all.... Was there ever a version sold with no soft roof and just a detachable hard top? or has the roof frame just gone missing over the years?

Not as far as I know. There was this

Looks similar to the Corvette Rondine.

They were both designed by Tom Tjaarda
1979 Fiat Spider (since new)
2005 Lincoln LS (the wife's car)
2003 Chevrolet Cavalier (daily driver)
1999 Honda Shadow VLX 600
1972 Grumman Traveller 5895L (long gone).

^ Both extremely cool looking cars! Thanks for posting those! Two more cars I never knew existed......

Based on that I think it's fair to assume that the roof frame is just entirely missing off the car whose photos I saw.... Thanks for sharing your knowledge 8)
