I've been looking at pictures of a car that doesn't have any hood frame at all.... Was there ever a version sold with no soft roof and just a detachable hard top? or has the roof frame just gone missing over the years?

Not as far as I know. There was this

Looks similar to the Corvette Rondine.

They were both designed by Tom Tjaarda

^ Both extremely cool looking cars! Thanks for posting those! Two more cars I never knew existed......
Based on that I think it's fair to assume that the roof frame is just entirely missing off the car whose photos I saw.... Thanks for sharing your knowledge

Hi,
the Abarth version of our fiat 124 Spider just has a Hardtop and no softtop under it!
Was this your question?
