Help with fuse box

Post by BobbyDee »

I recently purchased a 79 spider and it’s definitely a project car. There are fuses missing in the fuse box. Also, I’m not confident on the others being correct. Can anyone help me with an order of what should be in each slot?

That's a good deal on the owner's manual as Yadkin pointed out, but in the meantime, here are the fuse values for a '79:

A through H: 8 amps
I: 25 amps
L, M, N: 16 amps

Fuse A is closest to the steering column, and there are no fuses J and K because those letters don't exist in the traditional Italian alphabet. M and N are for the power windows, so if you don't have power windows, you don't need to worry about those fuses.

Side note here…last summer I purchased a ‘79 as well and spent about two months restoring the interior. When it came to do the fuse box, I opted to purchase ceramic fuses as opposed to the plastic ones…they were not much more money and I feel they will last the car’s lifetime. I’ll suggest you light sand the contact points and slightly bend the tabs securing the fuses. This way you’ll have maximum contact points. If you haven’t done so already, STRONGLY suggested is to remove all the ground “stars” and give them a light sanding as well. Apply electrical grease as well. These are usually the cause for electrical malfunctioning. Doing this will mostly eliminate the puzzling non working lights…if you happen to have any. The fuses you can find them on eBay—mostly manufactured in Brazil (which is the country who has been supplying South America with Mercedes trucks and buses for many years…my point here is that they know one thing or two about German engineering). Good luck!

Correction: I think I made a mistake when I wrote above that Fuse I was 25 amps, and I credit Spider2081 for pointing this out to me. Although Fuse I is listed as 25 amps on page 44 of the 1979 owner's manual, the previous page of the manual states that there are nine 8 amps fuses and three 16 amp fuses. No 25 amps. Other wiring diagrams that I looked at show Fuse I as 8 amps.

So, page 44 in the owner's manual appears to have a typo, and I think Fuse A through I are all 8 amps, while Fuses L, M, N are 16 amps. And a separate 8 amp fuse in an inline holder for the cigarette lighter.
