Hardware storage organizers?

Post by 18Fiatsandcounting »

What do you guys use for storage of all the little bolts, screws, pins, bulbs, connectors, etc that you have? I'm looking for something more robust than the 6 or 7 plastic drawer storage cabinets that I have scattered around the garage, which not only are kinda cheap and tacky, but have a tendency for the drawers to fall out. Any suggestions for metal drawer cabinets, like you sometimes see in hardware stores for small parts? I'm looking for something maybe 4 feet tall, 3 or 4 feet wide, and 1 or 2 feet deep. Many drawers of various sizes.

What's your favorite solution? Thanks!

in the still too small garage i built a bunch of cabinets that hang on the wall. Basically the same as upper cabinets from a kitchen (look for used ones if you are really cheap). The 12" cabinets are better than 15" deep unless you want to mount stuff on the doors (if the hinges are strong enough) I then installed a bunch of plastic bin cabinets on shelves. I happen to have the ones that are reconfigurable with small medium and larger drawers, but any assortment would work. I have about 4ft by 16" of 6" deep drawer space and that works relatively well. An upgrade would be to have labels on the drawers! But orgaization by material type in one area and metric in one cabinet and sae and woodworking etc in another seems to work.

I like that they are all above the workbench, but short people might not. I also put spare parts in the shelves above.

My fiat parts on are one side of the garage and the 1800es parts are on the other side.

But most important is the stereo in the garage......

I like that idea, Dinghyguy, and I'll run it by the wife. This was her idea to begin with, but I have to admit I was also getting tired of having numerous cheap plastic drawers all over. The larger issue is too many hobbies, as the parts drawers hold not only fasteners, but electronics, bulbs, fuses, wire nuts, nails, electrical plugs, grommets, wire ties, woodworking stuff, and on and on. Probably time to get rid of some stuff...
