Shifter

Post by Anbele »

I’ve been trying to find out the answer for this by looking at many pictures—to no avail…the question is: how does the shifter boot fit over the shifter rod? I’ve seen many where the boot is covering the whole shifter—which I believe is wrong, since the shifter rode is beautifully chromed, I’d imagine to be seen. I’ve seen the ones where the boot looks like an upside down folded umbrella…so which is/was the “factory” setting?

I know that there are at least two different lengths for shifter levers, as my '69 and '71 are different (short and long, respectively). The '71 may be original, but I know the '69 is not because some doofus reached into my car and stole the original shifter when the car was parked (with the top down) outside a store. So I found another shifter. Sigh...

I have vague recollections of about 2 or 3 inches of chrome shifter rod showing above the boot in my original spiders, but this goes back 40 years and longer.

This is how the PO had it set up on my 78. I’ve since changed it and not sure what the OEM set up was.

Here’s a dealership marketing brochure I have from 78. A little dark but it does look like a few inches of the shifter is visible above the boot.
