Oil filter recommendations

Post by richm »

Looking for specific oil filter recommendation for my 1982 Spider 2000.

Lots of brand info when I do I search here, but I'm really looking for brand AND part number.

I've been using Fram PH7 filters since I got my first 124 Spider in the 70s. I just used the last of my inventory. Can't find new ones anymore, just expensive dusty ones that look like they've been sitting around for 40+ years and they cost 20 bucks each. Time for something new.

I just installed a Bosch 3402. $8.49 delivered to my house. Seems to fit okay. It's not exactly the same size as the PH7. The gasket is slightly smaller.

So, which model filter and about how much does it cost?

Thanks.

Bosch 3402 will be fine, and I also use Wix 51189. To be honest, I just get them from RockAuto or PartsGeek or the like, and they are usually about $8 to $10. Roughly half the price that 5 quarts of oil will cost you.

I used to use Fram PH-7, but they are hard to find anymore, and I also started hearing a lot of negative feedback on their quality and performance.

If you have a Napa Parts near you I've been using the Napa 1189 for about 10 years with good results. I change my oil about once a year - which is about every 500 miles. If you're like me then the filter choice isn't really that important.

If you go to the D.C. Fiats web site there is an article in their tech section comparing 8 different oil filters. It's from 2011, so it's a little dated, but it's an interesting read and may give you some other suggestions.

+1 on the NAPA, it is made by WIX, it is much larger than most filters, thereby having more filtration area.

Thanks for that, Pete. Hmmm... NAPA = 1189, WIX = 51189. Coincidence in the numbers? I think not.

I think they sell it under their "NAPA Gold" brand.
