1979 Fuel pump

Post by RPihl79 »

I recently did a tune up on my 79 spider and put a clear fuel filter on. I've noticed that sometimes when the engine is running that fuel will just be spurting into the filter rather than flowing in and keeping the filter full. This happens in a variety of situations, cold start, hot start and after it's been running. For the most part this has not greatly effected over all performance, other than difficulty starting at times. Because of how inconsistent it is I've figured I've likely got a fuel pump on the way out.

Question the first: Is there anything else I should be checking here to help solve my problem?

Question the second: Checking with my local part store they can't get the original pump in. I've picked up a different in-line pump to replace it that has similar ratings. Original looks to be 27 gph at 3 psi, and the one I picked up is rated for 24 gph at 2.5-4.5 psi. Does this seem like a good replacement? What options have y'all used before?

All the vendors carry the mechanical pump. Also, be careful of the fuel filter. It will clog at about 120000 miles. I know.

120k miles is 12x the recommended surface life :D Can't really be made it for clogging.
