Hi All,
Just installed a set of Vick Headers and downpipe (2.25") and am now looking for a muffler solution to replace what was on. Anyone had any luck with some of the popular aftermarkets or otherwise? Trying to find a cheaper solution to the Vick performance muffler.

Thanks. I've heard Mark used to (possibly still does?) recommend the Flowmaster Hushpower HP2. I've also seen good results with the Flowmaster 60. Wondering if anyone has used these as the standalone muffler.

I made 2.5 SS with Magnaflow 3 chambers and without a resonator, it was too loud for me even if i have a turbo that cut sound.

Since it was cheap, I ordered a Lawson Insynerator Bullit chambered muffler off Amazon. We'll see how it works.

I recently went through a few exhaust iterations on my stock 1981 Spider. I walked away from this a few hundred bucks poorer and vowing to spread a counter-opinion to the Hushpower recommendations:
I have a new-ish cat, stock center pipe and muffler, and only replaced the rear muffler. Stock tubing diameter (I would not go larger for a stock engine...). At first I tried the Flowmaster Hushpower HP2 as I've seen recommended here. It comes in two lengths - I used the shorter one as it fit better. The sound was.... AWFUL. Terrible drone at low RPM cruising and when letting off the gas at any speed. ie. the sound got LOUDER when you took your foot OFF the gas. Not exactly the way I like an exhaust to sound. It drove me batty so I went back to the shop a few weeks later and tore the Hushpower off and put on a Magnaflow oval exhaust, offset entrance with center exit. It looks much better, and it sounds SO much better. Still screams at high RPM but doesn't boom and drone at low RPM or throttle liftoff. It's a straight-through perforated design.
For Magnaflow, they all use the same core size (2.5" diameter perforated tube) for the 2", 2.25" and 2.5" size part numbers. So whatever one your shop has laying around will work. I do recommend the offset entrance / center exit. it fits great and the offset entrance is a little quieter than a center entrance (because the perforated tube is now bent into an S-shape.
I'll post some sound clips someday... too bad I didn't take any of the drone-o-matic Hushpower...

Exhaust systems are a bit of an art. I had a new muffler installed on my '69 Chevy pickup (straight six engine), to replace the straight through pipe that it had, and the gas mileage plummeted and I pretty much had to floor it all the time to get it moving. I didn't even bother to take it back to the shop, but just hacksawed off the muffler and performance returned to "normal". It's a little louder than stock, but in a nice burbly sort of way.
Getting the right sound is even more of an art. I personally don't care for raspy exhausts, or a constant droning. Wears you down over time.
