Engine oil

Post by tima01864 »

I have searched for 15w-40, Rotella diesel is what I have been using. What about this?

Looks good. I like the anti wear additives for cams and lifters.

For that money there are many options, like Mobil 1 15-50 racing oil.

I will pass on the synthetics, I think they are too advanced for the engine and it's seals.

Most aviation oils are designed for air-cooled engines. I don't know if this is a problem or not.

My local NAPA has a 15W-40 that's labeled "Diesel Engine Oil" that I use (I think it's the NAPA brand). It's not Rotella, but I add a little ZDDP to it and it's served me well.

Rotella 15w-40 easy to come by, I saw it at Stop and Shop once. Why it is only labeled as Diesel, Searching around for 15w-40 designated for gas engines. Not there.

Yep, technically a diesel oil because of the high detergent content that diesel engines require.

What you need is something with very high levels of both zinc and phosphorus. I gather Rotella may have that, but I use Penn Grade 20W-50 which definitely does - it's the former Kendall GT, the green oil. Recommended for older flat tappet engines, like ours.

The only thing that concerns me and my seals is a partial synthetic. Good qualities, I pasted the PDF
https://penngrade1.com/wp-content/uploa ... s-2019.pdf
And they do offer 15w-40

You can get the Shell Rotela at most any farm or truck store, and not a pick-up store. I have used Rotela for years and really like it, but then I am a farm boy, just an old one.

You can order the original pure dinosaur variety from your distributor if you like. I use the partial synthetic in both cars and my Porsche engine builder uses it exclusively - lots of seals in Porsche engines.

The Rotella does have hi Zinc, I think it was like 1100 if I remember correctly. We went through this a couple of years back, I think it was, and I finally just called Shell Tech Support and had a conversation with them. Discovered that the zinc level was NOT lowered or eliminated around 2015 with the "new" Rotella, as had been rumored.
