Working on getting my 77 road worthy. It rained here all weekend and the thought came to me to check the wipers. They work but pretty slowly. Works well enough to clear the windshield in a slight drizzle at a stop sign, but when moving above 10 mph no way.. any thoughts? lube the motor maybe??
thanks
AL

Buy RainX in the orange jug or buy it in the concentrate that you add to the washer fluid and you will never worry about the speed of your wipers again. It is the best stuff out there. Came home last week in a 30 min. downpour and did not ever have to put the wipers on.

Alan,
It is real easy to remove the cowl and lube the linkage. Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

Pope, great idea... my father in law mentioned to me years ago he uses that stuff. Iwill have to get some.
Chris,
thanks for the idea. I was wondering if that was what I should do. Were you able to use any of those parts?

I have used a few, the wiper motor was one of them and will use some more in the near future. I still haven't put the trans in my driver, I am hoping it works fine. I wonder if there is a place local that can do a bench test on a trans.

I second the motion for rain-x, but also try lubrication. Mike Bouse has a good "How To" for unsticking stuck blades

you might find some useful information in there. I know I did, because I found this quote from Mike:

it just doesn't get any better than that, lol. Applies to windshield wiper function as well as prostrate health.mbouse wrote:I keep the issue away for a while by applying some oil to the shaft every month.

I removed my motor, took it apart, and cleaned the brushes, and the motor. Installed it and lubed the linkage which went from horrid, to bad, but it never got great. Wipers work great none the less.

careful there, Danno. taking statements outa context is something generally reserved for politicians.
sound bites is what they call them.

Not to sure but possibly the fact that the wipers, cigarette lighter and heater fan all are on the same circuit and the grounding is sketchy at best most of the time. I plan on using a relay to power up the motor directly to the battery and taking it off this circuit altogether. I plan on starting to go through my car and welding studs to good structural areas for better grounding were its accessible . I've been taking apart a 74 and have noticed that my suspicions of the grounding being sub-par are being confirmed .

thanks for the input. IU got brave and took it apart. It was a mess rust and corrosion everywhere. I cleaned it up as best as i could, used some sand paper here and there and some wd 40. It works strong now but still not very fast. So driving in a downpour may not be a great idea. I seem to remember my 1982 wasnt so good in a heavy rain. Putting it back together I had to be creative in holding 3 contact brushes out of the way so the main shaft could slide in.

yup, brown wire surgery is a great idea. and headlight relays will help divert power consumers to other sources of juice.

i don't know why my secretary did not mention these at the same time. Danno... you are a slacker!
