Bought my '79 Spider in 2000 (auto tranny,...oh, well) in poor mechanical condition, stock, with the ADHA and dual plane intake manifold. It limped along bravely for awhile, with a head gasket leak, after I installed a rebuilt short-block and rebuilt the head/cams/valves. Didn't get driven, 'cause it didn't run well. It was stored a lot over the next twenty years,...finally got back to it.
I recently resealed the head, and installed a single plane, and a new DFEV carb. Running well, so I took it for an alignment, and it was found to have small cracks on the underside of the unibody frame rail - around the cross member studs. Yipes!
Happily, in no time at all, I was able to search out the repair thread on the forums. And in less than twelve hours later, I found a professional (that's done bodywork on the Spider before) that can do the repair! Amazing!
Anyway, took it into the professional today,...~15 miles of highway to, and ~15 from,...and the car was an ABSOLUTE pleasure to drive! It's never been in such good mechanical condition, and I can REALLY tell!!
I FINALLY got the "feel" of a 124 Spider, for the very first time, today! I'm really glad that I bought this car!
Just braggin',...
Todd.
