Well, if they are the original mounts and different sizes, the way you would tell which goes on which side would be by the way the angle of the bracket between the engine and the rubber mount. On both sides, the bracket should "sweep" towards the rear as you move away from the engine. Kind of like an airplane wing, in that the part attached to the fuselage is more forward than the tip of the wing.

There's only one way you can install the mounts so that they both sweep backward as you go from block to motor mount, and so that would be the way to install them.

There's just a hint of a sweep but it is there. So that puts the taller bracket on the exhaust side of the motor in case anyone ever runs into this.

Yes, the sweep is subtle. As I recall, the trailing edge of the bracket is perpendicular to the block, but the leading edge angles rearward as you move out from the engine.

Somewhere on here I read that I should watch out for a ball bearing when removing the speedo gear. I found a ball bearing laying on my bench near where I was working on the transmission. So I went looking for the post that talked about it and couldn't find it. I found a drawing of the gear and housing and didn't see this bearing. Is there supposed to be a small ball bearing just inside the speedo gear housing?

Going by memory here, there are only a couple of places that ball bearings are used in the spider transmission:

1) A ball bearing that secures the speedometer drive gear to the transmission shaft. Not the speedometer drive assembly that connects to the speedometer cable, but the actual gear on the transmission output shaft.

2) On the detents for the shift rods, to provide "feel" as you shift into a gear. Again, going by recollection, these ball bearings are behind a couple (or three?) springs that are held in place by a metal cover plate that is secured to the outside of the transmission with two 13mm bolts (likely M8x1.25).
