REPLACING HEAD GASKET

Post by njspider »

The head gasket on my '82 took a dump. Can the head be removed with the intake still attached? What about the exhaust manifold? Any tricks or pitfalls to know about? Thanks

I instlled mine with the intake and plenum attached, The only bad about removing the head was at the exhaust downpipe. I broke off three or four studs and had to have them replaced. The nuts on the manifold came off, Maybe a good time to have the cylinder head rebuilt?

Yes, in fact it may be easier then trying to get everything off first. It will take two people to lift it off safely but easily do-able. Start spraying penetrating oil on the exhaust manifold nuts now and give it a few days.
