I agree with RRoller that this is pretty interesting, but I have no good way of assessing whether the 15 to 24% number is accurate. I can only speak for my experience here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and while a number of spider owners are regulars on this forum, I just don't see many of these cars out on the roads. Occasionally, yes, but not on a regular basis. Maybe they're all trying to resolve the issues with their carburetors, ignition systems, or cooling systems...! :D

Hallo Ralf,
This may or may not help, but back around 1990, I shipped six spiders from Southern California to the port in Bremerhaven. I don't recall the details, but my contact for the imports was a fellow named Bernd Stowasser. Totally nice guy, and he and I were friends in college, but I have totally lost contact with Bernd. So, if by chance you come across him, say Hello for me. And to the six Fiats.

Hi Bryan,
nice story! I just looked at national telephone list: There are just 3 named Bernd Stowasser here in germany:
https://www.dastelefonbuch.de/Suche/Bernd%20Stowasser
Interested to get in contact again?

I read about a Re-Import of 153 Fiat Spider from a german company Liebermann in munich and got the chassisnumbers for the Register!
They bought the cars directly from Fiat USA and their stock in New Jersey, which was partially flooded. So various Limited Edition cars came ~1983 to germany and were partially refurbished for the german market (i.e. new paint, lost of LE-badges etc.).

Hi Ralf, thanks for that information. All I know is that Bernd was several years older than me, so that would mean he would be about 60 years old at this point. I have no idea where he lives, and he may not even remember me, but we were at the California Institute of Technology in the late 1980s/early 1990s. My role was to purchase the six cars and have them shipped to Germany, and he paid me well. The only requirement was that the cars be late 1970s models, with no rust. The German TÜV, you know.
