Thanks for your reply Mark.
I believe that washer is the problem. Is it possible to tighten or refold the washer without dropping the drive shaft or transmission? Mine looks pretty beat up like someone tried to fix it with a hammer!

you will need to unbolt the driveshaft from the flex joint. Then, there is a snap ring on the end of the output shaft that comes off, then a retainer that you will need a small puller to remove. Then there is a rubber spacer and spring will come off. THEN you can get to the nut to tighten it. If your tranny is missing the rubber spacer, that could be the source of your noise. I understand that spacer is no longer available and that is what supports the snout of the driveshaft

Is this collar available anywhere? The flange (and the doughnut) need to be replaced on my 71/1608 but the new flange that I have does not have the collar or the rubber boot attached. Would it be poossible to un-crimp the collar and swap it to the new flange?

Thanks, Rich

I've seen these parts occasionally on eBay, although often overpriced and in not very good condition. But occasionally there are deals out there.

If the collar is the part I'm thinking you're describing, yes, that could be swapped from one yoke to another. As for that rubber boot at the end of the collar, that's very hard to find these days. For my car, I found some very large (1.5" diameter) heat shrink tubing, and then just used a heat gun to shrink the end around the collar and still somewhat loose on the driveshaft. Seems to be working OK so far, although admittedly not an ideal solution.

Thanks for the reply Bryan,

The rubber boot is in good shape and so is the collar but I need to swap the collar and the boot over to a different output flange (which I have) but I can't get the crimped-on collar off of the old output flange. I've tried to get a screwdrive blade and a thin chisel between the flange and the collar but I can't make it budge. The collar spins freely around the flange but the 3 crimps hold it from separating.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks, Rich

Hmmm.... Well, I haven't ever actually removed these collars, so I'm not going to be much help. Perhaps someone else knows?

Note that I don't have access privileges to be able to view your photos.

I can view these pictures, thanks. Unfortunately, it looks like the metal collar is one of those things that is not meant to be removed once it is installed. Hang on to that rubber boot, though, as those things are very hard to come by and yours looks in pretty good shape. I see a couple options:

1) use a Dremel tool or a drill to carve out those three indented areas and then the collar should slide off. Or, just drill out enough of the indents to be able to get a strong pick or screwdriver into the hole to allow you to pry up the rest of the indented area.

2) buy a new used one such as: https://www.midwest-bayless.com/p-6686- ... pd-u8.aspx

By the way, what happened to the end of your yoke? Looks like it got caught on something?

And yes, starting a new thread in the technical area might get you more responses.

Thanks Bryan for the link - I think i'll buy that - as orford said, the balance would be out of whack. As for what happened - I think when the Rubber doughnut let go a bolt must have flown out and contacted it.
