Oil Leak

Post by DieselSpider »

Finally replaced the Brake Reservoir Hoses the other day and decided to check if that fully resolved the dropping brake fluid level issue I was having and it did. I also took the time to check the ground pods, etc under the hood with the engine running and about 10 minutes into that saw a puddle of Diesel Rotella coming out from under the car.

One of the fairly new 1/2 inc Gates SAE R6 hoses rated for hydraulics at 400 PSI and 400 Degrees used for the remote Diesel Oil Filter failed. I am sure glad I did not go for a test drive before checking the ground pods.

Now debating on what hose to use instead. Perhaps just shell out for the Hayden Lifetime 1/2 inch oil hose and not trust Napa to spec out the correct hose?

A high pressure diesel oil pump will empty the crankcase in a moment through a 1/2 inch open line.

Yes, perhaps even faster than forgetting to put the oil fill cap and/or dipstick back in. Amazing how much oil comes through these openings, and my low oil pressure light was flashing red within minutes. Along with the oil-drenched engine compartment... Sigh....

Found that when the engine is running the hose was at times rubbing against the frame rail so I used the extra Gates SAE R6 I had left over from the last time and put both 1/2 inch oil hoses through an 8 inch length of 1.5 inch clear vinyl tubing which has a 5/16 inch thick sidewall to prevent chafing where the lines pass close to the frame rail.

Now to clean a diesel oil stain off the white concrete driveway. Heat index is already over 101 degrees here.
