bearing type noise from back of car
Hi all. I have a not very loud hum type noise coming from back of car. I just replaced dif oil because of it and it did not go away. I don't know how long the noise has been there but I have recently noticed it. It does not get very loud. I notice it more when slowing down to a stop. Is a little rear end noise normal or should I be concerned ?

The rear end should be pretty quiet, so a hum isn't normal. It could be either the bearing to the input of the differential, or one of the outer wheel bearings. It could also be a problem with the differential, but these are pretty robust so I'm not thinking it's that.
Lift up the rear of the car by putting (sturdy) jack stands under each end of the axle, take off the rear wheels, and see if there's any movement of the axle shaft on either side, either in and out or side to side. You might need to remove the brake calipers to really tell. Do the same test with the input shaft to the differential. If there is any movement, there's your problem.

Thanks for the reply. If it is the bearing of the input shaft, is that something I can replace myself or is this a job for the professionals ?

Differentials are tricky to set up correctly, and require a lot of specialized tools. If it were me and the input bearing needed replacing, I'd take it to a shop that specialized in this work.grasshopper wrote:Thanks for the reply. If the car has the original rear axle it will have a front load differential so you may be better off just ordering a new third member from Vicks or AR along with new axle bearing and seals. All the tricky adjustments are already done since the third member has the ring gear and spider carrier already mounted and aligned with the pinion gear.
