Re: Turbo kit for 1981 2000
Hi guys,
I have bought a "project" 1981 Fiat Spider Turbo that I am going to restore with my son to the original specs or as close as possible. I know that the parts for the turbocharger are almost impossible to find, but you never know.
What I have left from the turbo system is the Turbo intake plenum, oil pan with oil return, u shaped manifold between turbocharger and exhaust downpipe.
I am missing: exhaust manifold, turbocharger, boost enrichment switches. So by any chance does anyone has the missing parts and is willing to sell them?
When I have had lived in Canada I owned 2 Fiat Spiders , one 1800 carbureted and one 2000 FI. I have moved to Europe and I bought this car as a project to work on with my son as I had great fun with the two cars I have in Canada.
Parts here in Europe are no problem except for the turbo, what is available is only the volumex/turbo head gasket. I have already found VDO enrichment booster switches that match the specifications ( and are adjustable) from the documentation available at mirafiori.com, so it needs only soldering the correct resistors.
I am pulling the engine out of the car this weekend for close inspection and probably rebuild.
I will document the progress and post any information that can be useful to keep as many Turbo Spiders running.
Ludek

Hi
and welcome! Great father&son project, especially to rebuild a Turbo Spider to original condition! Turbo parts are rare indeed!
The worldwide Spider Register actually counts approx. 300 Turbo Spider worldwide. Is your car already listed?
https://www.fiatspider.de/register?Fahr ... ective=All
If not, it would be great to get the car data. Thanks in advance.
Good luck with your project and your parts search!
Cheers Ralf

Re: Turbo kit for 1981 2000
A few (quite possibly useless) things to add:
Rod, user name rodo, has successfully used switches from presair in case yours don't work out.
A member named hamstra has used, I believe, a Garrett turbo as a replacement (in case you give up on finding an original).
A reputable hydraulics shop can build you an oil supply line in case you need that as well.
Make sure your distributor has one of the centrifugal weights impeded by a metal link, as that prevents over-advancing the timing under load.
At a car show two years ago in CA, I remember an owner saying they had a back-up turbo--so they are out there somewhere!
A PO of my father's '81 had the turbo rebuilt in AZ somewhere, if I remember I will look in the paperwork next time I go out to visit.

Hi
in addition: user Hamstra is Alfred Hamstra from Groningen (NL) a well known Fiat owner and expert (he owned various cars incl. Volumex No.001/500).
Your Turbo car data will be updated in the Register. Upload to next month as always.
Cheers

Re: Turbo kit for 1981 2000
Thanx for the info. I have already sent an email to Alfred about the specs of the Garrett turbo he used as a replacement. As for the switches I did some research and VDO has air pressure switches that meet the required specifications with 3 terminals NO/NC that can be modified by adding (soldering) resistors to them : 1750 ohms to 1PSI switch (VDO part No. 430.101)and 500 ohms to 5 PSI switch (VDO 430.104). The switches are also adjustable for boost fine tuning. I just have to find a supplier that has them in stock. I will post my progress.

Hi guys, I just found out that I have by mistake posted the wrong link to the Fiat Spider Turbo that we have. Here is the correct link to the registry. https://www.fiatspider.de/register/vehicle/2724
I am sorry. Ludek

Hi Ludek,
not your mistake, that's one of the "mistakes" of the actual Register. Every month your car will get a new link, so nothing static.
Static will be this result list for a search of just your car:
https://www.fiatspider.de/register?Fahr ... ective=All
But.. we are working on a better decision! Cheers
