Locking fuel cap

Post by stupidsongs2 »

I just moved to a rough part of town and was wondering if anyone knew of a good locking fuel cap?

I hope not! But in that same area of discussion, anyone have any good anti-theft ideas?

I don't think it is really a anti-theft device but my latest fiat has a battery disconnect switch mounted in the trunk. This would prevent anyone from hot wiring it but if they had 4 strong people they could still pick it up and carry it away.

I have a friend who has a small used car lot along with his Machanic shop and he told me that he takes off all the locking gas caps soon as he gets a car with one on it and changes it to a regular cap.
He said any thief with a screw diver can pry off any of them locking caps and what he does is just put very little gas in the cars and when they steal the gas from them ,,they don't ruin the cap .. Ld

the problem with locking caps on Spiders is that any of the later Spiders that required unleaded fuel have a reduced filler neck. Most locking caps won't fit. I have locking caps in stock, but they onlly fit the early cars

i'd be worried about the damage done by some crazed maniac prying off the locking cap; i bet the damage control would be less than my deductible, and certainly more than a replacement tank-0-gas. IF the maroon could siphon out all 11 gallons, i hope he swallows at least a pint of it.

anti-theft? keep nothing of value in the car. install a battery disconnect. take keys with driver.

unless gas goes to 100 a gallon, no one is going to spend the time to rip apart a fuel filler. Locking caps are to keep the honest people from stealing gas, or to merely deter the crooked ones. If the cap doesn't come right off, they'll just move to the next car in line

What kind of thief would pick a Spider to steal gas from anyways? What would she get...two or three liters of gas. Wouldnt you pick a Hummer or a Cadillac Escalade where you get 10's of gallons?

stealing a few gallons of gas is far different than stealing the car. Different reasons for either case

Stealing the gas may be entry level theft, but it starts you down that slippery slope.

That's kinda what I'm thinking, if you are going to expend the effort to break all the crap, you'll go steal something worth more than a few dollars.

I've got a new idea to rig up the gas flap to the horn. Basically, there is a little switch that arms/disarms the alarm, and another little switch that trips when the flap is open.

make sure you have air horns, otherwise the would be thieves will just laugh while stealing the fuel
