Brake Compensator

Post by cyberborikua »

What is the purpose of the brake compensator boot? Does it need to be packed with grease or something? Any help is appreciated.

When you brake hard, the car tilts forward. This in turn reduces the grip on the rear axle. It is then much more likely to lock up the rear wheels and a car with a locked rear axle is like a wild animal; there's not telling what it will do.

To make this virtually impossible, the brake compensator limits the amount of pressure in the lines to the rear calipers. The more the rear lifts up, the less pressure it will allow through.

Very important safety piece. Make sure it is in good working order.

Thank you. But the question is in regard to the purpose of the rubber boot. Is it just to protect the compensator or should I add grease to it?.

It probably is there to protect the compensator from road grime. I would blow out all the dirt with shop air and then add some grease to it. Then make sure it moves easily, you should be able to push it by hand.

You do not need to pack it full either just a few dabs of grease on the moving parts. A cable tie can be placed around the base of the boot to help keep it in place.
