Brake fluid leak near reservoir

Post by Fiatracertracer »

Hello, I have a leak on the number one hose coming out of the brake reservoir and leading into the brake booster.

The hose is wet from the top down to the booster. Any ideas where the leak is coming from?

Do the reservoirs crack?

How do you remove the OEM hose crimps without man handling them.

Is the reservoir original? New?

There is a known issue with new brake fluid reservoirs that were manufactured in Yugoslavia. See here:

Are the hoses made for brake fluid, or just generic fuel hose? Fuel hose will leak brake fluid right through their wall.

The hoses, crimps and reservoir are original.

Are the OEM brake reservoirs known to leak or crack?

Yes 34 year old plastic reservoirs have been known to crack and leak. Usually related to a master cylinder change when the fittings have been pulled from the master cylinder stressing the hoses and reservoir.

My 34-year-old reservoir was literally crumbling on the outside. It had not broken or cracked, though.

Imagine my dismay when the new replacement spontaneously cracked, a mere days or weeks after installation!

That reminds me. If you really wanted to, you can use a brake fluid reservoir from a Yugo and do away with the firewall mounted bracket and hoses. Just pull the nipples out of the grommets on top of the master cylinder and pop it Yugo reservoir in.

I can't use one on my car because I've got this massive Malpassi turbo fuel pressure regulator that won't allow it to fit.

Also BMW clutch reservoir hose will fit a Fiat master cylinder/reservoir which is rated for DOT 3 brake fluid. The original hoses were getting pretty groaty looking and noticed the ones on mom's '92 325 looked about the same size. I stopped by the local dealership and they sold it by the meter. It wasn't cheap, about $9.00 for three feet from my recollection.

Fixed:
The leak was caused by the OEM deteriorated cloth braided hose.

Replaced the hose and the leak is gone.

My little leak is at the nipple and grommet on the master cylinder itself. The reservoir and hose from it are new as is the master cylinder. The leak seems to be where the nipple seats even though the grommet is also new and came with the master cylinder. I have another nipple from my old master cylinder that is 90 degrees off rather than straight up like the new ones. Can I safety pop out the new nipple and replace it with the old one without damaging the grommet? Is there another way to seal the connection?
