Hello Folks,
I want to understand what the PO did and if already all smog stuff is removed. I have a few hose dangling around which are blocked with !screws! and I want to know what they were for.
Here are the facts about my car:
1978 CS1 1756ccm, probably California car now in Austria
Motor number: 132A1.03.6 (I found out it is a California motor so should be original)
Head number: 134AS.6C
Carb: 34 DMTR 51/250 8J
I have a few questions, please refer to the numbers to make it clearer. Thanks!
Question 1: (picture from the passenger side, near cooler)
I have two belts missing. What were they for, smog A.I.R. pump?
The one remaining is for the alternator.
Question 2:
What are these studs for, what is missing?
Question 3:
What is this thing below the intake manifold?
Question 4:
What is this hose for? It´s on the drivers side below the alternator and blocked with a screw. It is about 16 inch (40cm) long, then connected to a metal pipe. The pipe disappears near the clutch housing, maybe a fuel pipe which is going under the carbody?
Question 5:
What was mounted under the footwell of the passenger side? There are three pairs of bolts and nothing is mounted.
Maybe there was the catalysator?
Question 6:
What are these studs on the cylinder head for? On one of them is some special green sealant, maybe it is broken.
Thanks,
Johannes

Re: Removed smog stuff, unknown parts
Hallo Hannes!
Here are some answers. My car is also a '78 California
1) One of the belts was definitely for the smog air pump. What the third position is for, I'm not sure. Mine is also blank. Could have been a factory option A/C?
2) Smog Air Pump
3) That's your fuel pump
4) Used to go to the Carbon filter for the fuel evaporation system
5) Cat would've been on the other side, in the exhaust stream. I'm not sure. Lemme check my car later tonight.
6) That was where the secondary air injection went into the exhaust stream. The smog pump would pump air into the exhaust stream during warmup to heat up the converter faster.
Cheers
Steiny

Re: Removed smog stuff, unknown parts
My car is also a '78, but Canadian. It never had a catalytic converter, but if it had, it would have been mounted under the passenger's feet, where there's a hump in the floor. There should be four such plugs in the air injection holes. AR has flush topped studs with Allen holes that fit and look much better than what you have there. They're an odd size, so someone may have tried to make do with the wrong size, hence the green sealant goop. Hopefully they didn't strip the threads. I believe the correct size is M12 x 1.25.

Use one of those studs you were asking about, to add a second ground strap. They were for the air pump that was eliminated with the FI system, I believe.

5 is where a heat shield was mounted between the exhaust and the floorboards.

Re: Removed smog stuff, unknown parts
Thank you so much for your quick help guys
What does a Carbon filter do, how does it look like?
When I understand it right, it is used as return line to the tank on the original carb? So I should keep this when I want to switch back to the original carb at sometime?
Yes there are four plugs in the cylinder head to cover the holes. I am a technical engineer but my car English is still not the best.
Can you give me a link from AR to understand which plugs you mean?
It should be no problem for me to get such plugs in Europe (or recut the thread. I think I have to remove the head to recut because of the chips?)
I would like to remove the green sealant goop, can I scrap it off and use new sealant to seal the new plugs?
What could possibly go wrong, just a small leak of exhaust gas or the engine running bad?
Normally we use Loctite screw lock or sealant, would it be enough?

Here's a link for the AR plugs:
https://autoricambi.us/cylinder-head-ai ... -plug-set/
Loctite would be fine when you install them. You might not need to remove the green stuff if the threads are clean.

It's a pretty big round cylinder by the front left headlight. Pretty hard to miss, possibly yours has already been removed. I'm not sure exactly how it's plumbed, I think there's one big line from the carburetor going to it, maybe a vacuum line too and then it goes back to the fuel tank? Something like that.
Why would you want to go back to the original carb? It's junk.

I read that the 34 DMTR is not suitable for a longitudinally engine, in a right curve you could have a lack of fuel or so..SteinOnkel wrote:Why would you want to go back to the original carb? It's junk.
Do you think my DMTR is OK? (when I get it running smoothly)

Re: Removed smog stuff, unknown parts
I sincerely doubt that the 124 with a California engine will corner hard enough for that to make a difference.
I would recommend the Weber 34ADF. Mine is the Shengzhen Special Edition, but I got lucky and it works great.
