How did you get the District Attorney to help you on the car?

Thanks for the replies. My first mechanical project will be finding out what is making a loud creeking noise in the front suspension. It only makes the noise after being driven for a while. My son and I were riding around today looking for good photo locations and we were laughing that it sounded like geese were flying over us.
Re: My new 77
I wouldn't drive anymore until you check it out. You could be on the verge of a lower ball joint failing or having the steering dampner seize and break. Broken lower ball joints can be a disaster if you're at speed
Re: My new 77
Mark, that sounds like good advice. I have been meaning to pull the front wheels to check things out and this will be the impetus that I need. Thanks for the heads up. For some reason I thought that it must be in the shocks, A arm pivots, or the like. I had not considered the ball joints and the possibility of catastrophe. Thanks again for the wake up.

Hey Hutch,
if you find that your ball joints and other critical parts are ok (as was the case w/ mine),you might have the dreaded dry creaking ball joint disease.I know the sound you refer to all too well.I changed my shocks ,which needed to be done, and the creak was still there.Someone told me that since the ball joints have no grease fitting ,they dry out and creak.I bought an injection needle for my grease gun (4.00 at Napa),poked it through the boots and liberally greased the ball joints. Voila!!
silent driving.Make sure the ball joints are ok first!!!

Re: My new 77
I am going for the front end rebuild this winter.I already have all the parts incl.new ball joints. That is a great idea ,Dave! I will install grease fittings before I even put the ball joints on.

Re: My new 77
That is a great idea. Instead of trying to locate my noise I am going to do the total front end replacement this winter as well. After looking around at the front suspension it doesn't appear that much is new. With the cost of full replacement being so reasonable I think that is the route I'm going to take. With that said, what is the best service manual out there to use as a reference for something of this magnitude?

Re: My new 77
Before the maual question, I thought you'd benefit (as I did) from seeing the result of ball joint failure. I also had a creaking in the front end, when I checked my ball joints the upper on the passenger side was real sloppy in the knuckle. This is not my car BTW, it just motivated me to do the ball joints asap!
The general concensus is usually that not any one manual is the best. It is a good idea to get at least a couple, as each one will have it's strong and weak points.
