How much power difference?

Post by pertyfly »

Does anyone know how much more power I would get if I took all the emission stuff off my car?

I have the 78 1800. I've already taken off the air pump, which I know will rob power. I would like to plug those holes in the head for this. I'm thinking EGR as well. What would I remove to make more power, and what doesn't affect anything?

I think the Haynes book says it has 114 bhp, so what could it go up to just by removing these?

the air pump robs very little horsepower, after all it's only pumping air into the exhaust. Spin it by hand and you'll see that it doesn't take much to turn. I doubt if your egr still works, but just disconnecting the vacuum hose to it will disable it. Retuning the car will make more difference; a little more timing and rejetting will help. I'd also check the valve clearance. Definitely take off the catalytic converter, that will cost more performance than all of the other equip

LoL, yeah...

My car is a non-catalyst already, so there's no cat converter on it. I'll check the EGR operation and either way probably remove it

it will help a bit as far as reducing parasitic losses are concerned..... but the big advantage is wieght savings, as these parts all combined do add up to a significant weight. also the spider is not a very well ballanced car in factory trim, so anytihing you relocate to the rear, or as in this case simply remove from the front will help in getting a better weight balance. the optimum balance is a perfect 50 50. however without some serious modifications you willl likely not ever get close to this. happy tunning.

honestly.. you might see 90hp.. but seeing as the stock 1800 only produces 86.. that is not much.

however, couple that with a header, exhaust work, and maybe a retuned or larger single carb.. you should be up over a hundred. Sorry to say, the biggest limiter right now is the low compression pistons.
