While on the subject of speedo cable, what's the easiest way to get it temporarily away from the firewall so I can remove the brake booster?

Is it possible that you are referring to the clutch cable, the black cable about 3/8" in diameter that comes out of the firewall, circles around the top of the brake booster, then heads down to the clutch fork? I think the speedometer cable is routed through the body around the top of the clutch bellhousing, and not near the brake booster. At least in the Fiats I have.

If it is the clutch cable that's interfering with removing the brake booster, you can remove the 10 mm locknut and 17 mm adjusting nut from the clutch cable where it attaches to the clutch fork, pull the cable out of the clutch fork and move it out of the way. I suggest putting a small hose clamp or tape around the cable to prevent the metal cable from slipping back into the housing and coming loose where it attaches to the top of the clutch fork, which can be a total pain to reinstall correctly.
