It's hard to tell from the photos, but I think he may be running the Abarth independent rear end which would allow the exhaust to run under the axle so long as it is close to the diff which is in a fixed location.
An amazing sequence of photos, and a sad end to a very neat Spider. I'll bet the driver wishes he'd lifted off a fraction of a second earlier for that right-hander :(

That's what I stopped to look at, too... It definately looks like it has the independent suspension in the rear

I was noticing that it looked to have an independent rear end and some very extensive bracing of the floor.I hope it wasn't original.Kind of made me a little sick to my stomach to look at that.

I saw on another board that this was an original, and this happened on Sept 20. The others are just a little more valuable now.
