Delta A16 cam/regrind

Post by ward00 »

What could possibly be the reason that two lobes of the A16 cam have a duration of 242 degrees and two other lobes have a duration of 232 degrees (measured at .05 inches lift at the valve with cam installed in head but not on engine). All the cam lobes look the same and have no damage. I have repeated my measurements 5 times and each time, the same result. Has anyone here ever profiled a cam and come up with such a big difference? Should I throw it away?

Throw it away?

Your title says regrind, why not talk with the grinder first and see if there’s anything they’ll do for you?

It seems unlikely that normal wear and tear would produce the same measurements on two separate lobes.

Good luck. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be.

Since you measured the lobe durations by measuring the lift of the valve, if the valve to tappet clearances (valve lash) are different, you would see different answers for the different lobes. My guess is that, to truly figure out what you've got here, the cams would have to be removed from the head and measured by a shop that specializes in this work.
