I removed, cleaned and repainted my starter on my 1981. Trying to figure out which nut goes where as well as the connecting wire between the starter and the solenoid section which I removed. Anyone have a good picture of the end of the starter where the wiring attaches? I'm having trouble locating a picture. I want to ensure I have it oriented correctly.

Re: Starter picture
Man! It took 15 pics of various exposures, dangling my little Sony in the engine compartment, to finally get a good pic of the starter/solenoid, but here ya go!
I sure hope it helps. Todd.
Happy Holidays, Richard!

Great picture Todd! That will definitely help. Thanks for the hard word getting it.
I was also trying to figure out the order of the washers and nuts on the connections.
One of the bolts wiggles. Here's a video.

So I probably put one of the nuts on 1st and that will stop it from moving?

Re: Starter picture
Richard, I'm going by memory here, but here is how I recall the order of the nuts and washers, going from the head end of the copper bolt towards the free end:
Bolt #1 (closest to the starter motor that connects the braided wire going into the motor)
Copper bolt head (inside the solenoid housing)
Solenoid housing
Nut
Flat washer
U-shaped connector tab on end of braided wire
Flat washer
Split lock washer
Nut
Bolt #2 (where the big cable going to the battery connects)
Copper bolt head (inside the solenoid housing)
Solenoid housing
Nut
Lug connector on the big cable
Split lock washer
Nut
I'm always open to a better answer, but this would seem to work.

Re: Starter picture
Just remember the rule of thumb: The locking device (split washer, star washer, etc) always goes directly against the surface of the securing device (Nut, wing nut, etc). Never bury the locking device down in the stack.

What you suggested worked great. I had 1 lock washer left over but maybe that was an extra one the PO put on a some point. Thanks again.

Re: Starter picture
Its supposed to be tightened just like the stud that the load line to the starter is connected too using the inner nut. Be careful when you tighten it or you can mess up the solenoids contact inside.rjkoop wrote:Great picture Todd! That will definitely help. Thanks for the hard word getting it.

Re: Starter picture
Starter back in. I have a question about the starter main wire boot. I have the thick green wire and 2 other wires going to that point on the starter. Do all 3 wires go through the boot and then attach to the starter? Seems really tight and I'm just wondering if the green thick wire goes on the starter 1st and the other 2 wires go through the boot and then attach to the starter.
Here's a pic with all 3 wires shoved through the boot.
