SWAG,please,...

Post by wetminkey »

Thanks, I'm looking for a Sophisticated Wild-Ass Guess on timing marks,...
My car does not have any, but I have established a mark at TDC #4, and have it painted next to my crankshaft pulley. I'd like to establish, and mark, 10 degrees BTDC, for sure,...and the others, if possible.
I'm looking for a measurement, or SWAG, on how far from the TDC mark is 10 degrees BTDC (inches, or mm, I don't care,...)?
So,...I'm asking how far apart are the marks on your timing pointers? First should be TDC, second should be 10 degrees BTDC, and I think there's a third mark BTDC,...
Pics are helpful, but I can't gauge a measurement from them,...
Thank you very much in advance!
Todd.

Degree wheel perhaps would help?

HOT DOG!
Better than a SWAG, or a measurement,...
Damn, I can use this on other vehicles,...!
Thank you VERY much, Paul! No more guessing,...

The above are good ideas, and if you still are interested in a WAG, it's about half an inch for 10 degrees.

If you want a more Sophisticated WAG: Let's say your crankshaft pulley diameter is 5 inches. So the circumference would be 5 times pi (3.14), or 15.7 inches. If the total circumference is 360 degrees, that would be 0.044 inches per degree. So, 10 degrees would be 10 times that, or 0.44 inches. A little less than half an inch. You can measure the diameter of your crankshaft pulley and get a better estimate, as I just guessed at 5 inches.

Guess I'll need to calculate that, Brian, because the link requires 'legal' size paper to print out a tape for a 4.25" wheel (my most inner pulley diameter). Thanks.

Most inkjet printers will take legal size paper. :D

Sounds good. For a 4.25" wheel, the circumference would be 13.4 inches, or 0.037 inches per degree. If you want the 10 degree mark, it would be at 0.37 inches from your TDC mark. A skooch more than a third of an inch, "skooch" being a highly technical machinist's term... :)

Just don't have any legal-sized paper,...
But I can measure,...I'll place some marks before top dead center near this TDC mark:

Timing belt looks a little off center on the pulley?

Not that it is any different than the previous two, or that it causes any problems,...but, what would 'one' DO about it? I'm curious,...

No need to worry. I'm guessing that the glimpse of teeth on the pulley is due to the angle at which you took the picture. Plus, many other things (higher importance) to worry about on your engine at this point. Gotta get that bad boy running past 1500 rpm, then we can address the other stuff.
