Fiat Starter Question

I am wanting to buy a new starter for my 82- 124 -2000- fi -fiat and need to know if the 1981 starter will fit my 82.
The best deal I can see so far is through PARTS TRAIN ,,but they list their starters only thru 1981,,but in the IAP and Vicks they say theirs starters will fit from 68-85.
Anyone been there done this before ? LD

It is $ 51.79 and a 25.60 core charge and it's a Bosch ,,LD

i look at the first few words in the first sentance of the original post, and i say:

time out... hold the phone... wait a minute... are we talking NEW or rebuilt or reconditioned? big, and i mean big differences. there is no way a NEW starter for a Fiat Spider will sell for $52.00 and change. NO WAY !!

Remanufactured starters list above $150 at vicks and above $250 at IAP. Which makes the under $250.00 gear reduction starter sold by Mark Allison very, very attractive.

Do you know what the definition of reconditioned is? the reconditioner cleans the unit and replaces any noticable or obviously malfunctioning parts, and puts it into a box and sells it to you for under $100 plus core charge.

remanufactured means they actually take the unit apart and replace worn parts, then clean it and put it in a box.

NEW is just that.... new.

as difficult a task that i have heard replacing a Fiat Spider starter motor is (i've not personally had the pleasure) i would not hesitate to pop for the drastically smaller and lighter BRAND SPANKING NEW gear reduction starter over any reconditioned unit anyone sold me. my time to do the job over again in a couple months or a few years ain't worth the cash "savings".

Hello Mike ,, I have never bought a brand new starter for anything I ever owned and never ever had a problem with remanufactured ,,with that being said I still don't know yet if even the 81 will fit my 82 .. I came up with one that at least looks like mine and it is $15 more than the one above mentioned and I am trying to put the web site on here for you to read . I still appreciate your opinion and didn't know about the task of putting a starter in one of these so I thank you for that info for sure.
When I noticed the big difference in prices between Vicks and IAP I started looking at the place where I got my remanufactured Alternator at a about $70 plus shipping and this is what I find.. P.S. I see that I misinformed you by saying New above when I meant a remanufactured , like the one in this ad. LD

LD, the engines are the same from '79 up, so the starter will work. Changing it out is a bit more difficult than a lot of them mainly because of the top bolt, it's a bear to get to. You'll have to use long extensions and a universal on your rachet. Plus, it's tight quarters around the wires. But with patience it gets done. Hey, you're retired right? So you have plenty of time for it! :D
Just be sure to disconnect the battery before you start. (I'm sure you knew this, just thought I'd throw out a reminder.)

thanks Ron , now I know what to look for when installing it .. I found these 2 different looking starters . This is for the year of 1981 ,,which of the two does yours look like ? This one or the one in the above posting ? LD

I'm pretty sure the only starter that would look different is the gear reduction type, like what Mark Allison sells. It's got a smaller body than the standard size. Mine is a standard stock starter that had to get taken off when I put my Jon Logan rebuilt tranny in last winter.

the starter in that picture is a reman chinese replacement for either the Bosch or Marelli starter

Yes... and even if you think it's going to fit and the picture looks the same. You dont' get to find out it doens't fit, like I did on Sunday only after I fought the starter in place, yes my arm is still sore... I realized it was a quarter inch off one bolt hole. Reason... solenoid was hitting the steering box. Oh and the upper third bolt... real bugger to get to... I did it by brale.

So, even if pic is same for part number... be sure to really inspect the unit.... and for the troubles... you might as well rebuild your old one for about $30 in parts :) Although when I replace this one... I'll be going with the lighter starter now avail.

Be sure to inspect your Flex disc while your down there.... I had to replace mine! :shock:

Hi Papa, reading all the above, curiosity got the better of me "How much is a new starter in Europe?"
According to the Spider Point parts catalogue it is 153 euros.
I just knew this information would be a life changing experience for you.
