Location of Electrical Grounds

Post by Nitrate »

I have a 1981 Fiat 2000. I would like to know all the grounding locations on this model. Could someone help me out by listing them? Thank you. Rich B.

I have checked the archives but can only find a partial list. The electrical schematics aren't much help in physically locating the grounds on the car.

Under the dash between the steering column and radio location (a "crown"), on the right front fender under the hood toward the front ("crown") on the left side of the rear fender in the "boot" or trunk (stud) and a ground strap from the engine to the frame under the engine. There may be others.

Thank you George. My " crown" was on the driver's side inner fender toward the front.,I have FI,my car is 1981. I found another ground at the rear of the fuel injection cover on the driver's side across from the brake master cylinder. Another ground ran from the rear of the passenger side cam box to one of the bolts that hold the coil bracket to the inner fender well. I'll look for the one under the dash and the one you mention that goes from the bellhousing to the chassis. I have cleaned up the one in the trunk. I'm wondering if there is one additional ground from the engine block to the frame or maybe that's the one I mentioned above that runs from the rear cam box to the coil bracket. Anybody know of any others? Rich B.

Mine is an 83 so maybe different from an 81, But there are two wires grounding on the plenum. On the 83 there are two Crowns one near the steering column ans one near the fuse box.

81' 2000. I cleaned the ground connection located at the bellhousing inspection plate. I went to do the other end of the ground wire and found it was not screwed into the chassis. It looks to be welded or staked into a lug that is fastened to the chassis by the factory. Can anyone fill me in on that type of ground connection I've never seen one like that before. No way to clean that connection. I'm noticing a faster starts and smoother idle and my grounds weren't that bad to start with. I haven't addressed the crown ground under the dash between the steering column and the radio, I have located it though. I do not see a ground near my fuse box. RB

Many folks add a second ground strap, I bought a pre-assembled (6 or 8awg, not sure...) battery cable from the parts store and mounted it at one of the engine block studs that would be used if an AC compressor was installed (it's not), and ran it over to the fender sidewall and mounted it to a good ground there. Can drill a hole and use a self tapping if desired.

If you are a member of Mirafiori.com Fiat publication "Spider 2000 Electrical Diagnostic Manual 1980-1981" Is an excellent resource regardless of the year of your Spider. The circuit operation descriptions, Photos and troubleshooting suggestions all are great. This manual will show where every ground is located in a 1981 Spider.

The grounding pods can be located by tracing a ground wire to where it ends! :D

In general as others have stated, one under the dash between the steering column and the center console, one on either side of the engine bay towards the front of the fenders where the wires pass through to the side markers, and studs in the trunk under the carpet / by the tail light housings.

Ground straps from engine to frame and on FI car from back of cam housing to frame.
