New Fuel (injector) lines

Post by rodo »

Reached the stage with my '81 that I need to replace all the fuel lines. Got the correct clamps and hose but I am stumped with one part of the fuel line: the "in" line to the injector rail that seems to be fastened in a way purposefully designed to drive later owners out of their minds. I assume the fitting (rail side) and the screw union fitting are b/c of intense fuel pressure. Okay, so what does one do to replace that relatively short bit of hose? Probably appropriate to add here that I have removed the aluminum lines and will be replacing them entirely; my options are open.

Can see what I'm talking about here: https://www.middlebartongarage.com/Prod ... -Calif/218

This is the hose. See the screw on fitting (from the high pressure "in" line)? Where does one get a new one? Or does it matter? Is a new clamp instead of the threaded fitting okay for this high of pressure?

Seriously? No one with an FI Spider has had to replace this line? Everyone has had to replace this! It's thirty plus years old! So what did YOU replace it with? If you bought the replacement hose, where did you get it? Did you...cut the metal line and then just clamp hose on it?

I have replaced the hoses on a number of the fuel rails. The hose I use comes from Mcmaster Carr 56445K23
I also purchased a pinch clamp tool and us pinch clamp PN 5435K15 clamp size 157R. They may have a new part number. I feel they are much neater and easier to use than the screw type clamps.
To remove the hoses from rail and injectors I use a razor knife or xacto knife. If the hose is too brittle I use a dremal with a very small ball to cut the hose deep into the cup.
Grease the barb and hose ID and I heat the hose with a hot air gun. Push the hose on until its tight against the original cup. Be sure to have the injector connectors are pointing in the correct direction before pinching the clamp.
I clean and reuse the threaded input line fitting. It has a barb on it just like the rail and injectors.

Yes, factory line. I think the hardest part is attempting to save the caps/removing the old, dried up, hose. I'm getting there. Waiting on new injectors.

You can get the rings from MWB, they are OEM parts.

The fittings can be reused with new hose.

You will need to carefully cut off the hose ensuring you don’t nick the fittings themselves.

Another good source for FI hose and fitting is Belmetric. They have most of the OEM fittings.
