5-Speed Syncro Hub Question

I am rebuilding the transmission for my 83 spider right now and I want to clarify which direction is the proper orientation of the slider hub. On one side of the hub there are notched grooves on the inner part of the 3 lugs.

From the wear grooves on my hubs, it looks like slider hub 1/2 has the notched side facing toward the output side, and slider hub 3/4 has the notched side facing the input side of the mainshaft. Is this the correct orientation? Does the orientation even matter?
