re gluing side morror latch

Post by grasshopper »

Hi guys. Has anyone had success re gluing the lock mechanism back onto the little triangle vent windows ? I also have a little chip of glass missing from where it mounts. Must have chipped off when the latch fell off,,,
Any ideas on adhesives ,,etc,,?

They belong in the map pockets on the kick panels, they are only glued to the window as a shipping position from the factory.

Ha! It is only a convertible.
Latches, they're kinda like door locks in a convertible, they function to hold position only,...
Latches!?,...who needs latches?!

Actually, I do like mine to be in place, and functional. But they are a PITA, huh!?
My driver's came back off, but I did not use 100% alcohol to clean. I think the RapidFix is the answer,...chips/irregularities can be filled with the powder that comes with it.

...and if you don't feel like paying for the Rapid Fix, you can use any cyanoacrylate glue (Super Glue) and baking soda.
The magic welding powder in the Rapid Fix is either baking soda or very similar to baking soda.
If you use baking soda, you will want to pulverize it as fine as you can to make it more "powdery".

I wonder if roughening up the glass at the adhesion area would help. A Dremel with a small ceramic bit would probably do it.

Maybe but it may also promote spider cracks radiating out from the scoring of the glass.

Perhaps, but not scoring, just roughen the surface up a little with some sandpaper. Even glass with a deep scratch rarely extends. If it is broken all the way through, sure, but I would be very surprised if sanding a small dot sized surface causes any greater problem?

In my case, multiple attempts to reattach resulted in both vent latches delaminating part of the glass when they last came off. So the better glue doesn't equal better glass. Latches now reside in my glove box where they will stay forever with two small chips in the vent glass.
