Gas tank gasket
I'm about to install my gas tank. What alternatives, besides paying money for something from AR or Vicks, or wherever, have folks used as a "gasket", the rubbery stuff, the "fuel tank to body sealing foam"? Thought about some home foam window insulation strip but curious to know what others have used.

Hi Rodo
I used EPDM Rubber that I cut to shape. but that's only because I had a sheet of it lying around after a roof repair
I am sure any Silicone sealant or windshield sealant would work

Thanks, Drummond. For some reason I was not even thinking about silicones. That seems a perfect solution.

Any automotive grade high density foam tape that won't absorb liquids accelerating the rusting process should do. Most autobody supplies should sell it by the foot along with the tubes of autobody adhesive caulk that you could use instead. It usually will be a polyurethane or butyl rubber caulk and not a silicone.
At $9.99 the seal from AR is not that badly priced:

Silicone and gasoline are incompatible. It takes 15 minutes and a sheet of gasket material from your local auto store to make a reusable sender gasket.

Re: Gas tank gasket
For the tank to trunk floor I use hose hold weather striping called Mortite. Most senders come with a new rubber gasket. If you need to fabricate one I would use something that is at least 1/16 inch thick. The tank opening and studs are not a very flat surface.
