Megasquirt (Database, Installation, etc.)
Hello Friends of the Megasquirt-ECUs,
I'm in the last steps of building my 2.0 Engine with 125TC Head and some other modification in my 1980s Spider.
To get the best performance and drivability I decided to use a type of MS2-ECU for injection and ignition.
So my questions is:
Is there a database for tunes of our Spiders to make the first steps easier?
Btw:
I know there are a few other Spiders with this type of ECU here in this forum, and as the old Bosch ECUs will becoming older and older I think they will be more in the future.
What do you think of adding a new Site just for Megasquirt-Stuff in this Forum?
Greetings from Munich
Norbert

No. And this approach is heavily frowned upon by MS users. Every engine is different and you will learn nothing by using someone else's tune. Except how to blow up an engine, maybeSo my questions is:

Program your load axis in all tables to suit your engine and taste.
Then start with an AFR Target Table. Make something that you think will work and drive nicely. Google around a bit, you'll see what they are supposed to look like. For timing use something super mild. Look through old literature and try to find a distributor curve for the car and use that as a guide. In your VE Table select all cells and type in one number. Let's say 35. See if it starts.
Go through the initial startup guide and get the thing running and up to operating temperature using any means necessary. Open up your ve table and type in whatever numbers it needs to stay idling decently. Watch your AFR gauge like a hawk. Once it's idling okay:
Turn off every single correction. MAT, Baro, Accel Enrich, run in open loop etc. Make sure that you have a full license to tuner-studio and head into the "auto-tune" section. Make the cell resistance to change "very easy", maximal cell change 100 etc. You want to give it basically full control over fueling. With the car sitting in your garage, play with the throttle. Try to hit as many bins as you can for as long as you can and let it correct until it's satisfied. Eventually the engine will rev up without any problems.
Make the parameters for auto-tune tighter and go for your first (gentle) test-drive. Avoid stabbing the throttle and let auto-tune do it's thing.
Eventually, all you do is drive the car around with super tight auto-tune parameters et voila you have your fueling table. Done.
Then you re-introduce the correction factors one by one and before you know it the car runs like a dream.
Schoene Gruesse nach Muenchen!

Hey SteinOnkel,
Thanks for this perfect Step-by-Step Guide
That’s the thing I meant! It’s good to have some Specialists in this Forum...

Re: Megasquirt (Database, Installation, etc.)
I'm in favor of more megasquirt conversations and will be looking forward to reading through them.
DIYautotune has a great forum on all things megasquirt.
As a side note, I've compared other tunes which came from cars similar to mine, and was very surprised by the differences.

Norbet,
If you go this route can you share which TPS you used and crank pull modifications.
Thanks
Ralph

Hi,
Thanks for this info Joe!
Ralph, I used a Standard Bosch TPS with the D-shape of the throttle shaft and I only had to build an adapter for the screws.
Regards
Norbert

ElGrande even though there is a megasquirt forum I’m still in favor of posting MS related information here to benefit all squirted Spider owners.
Hopefully everyone else is too.

The MS Forum is useless. Not once have I received a proper answer there, just boiler-plate nonsense from the below average manuals.joelittel wrote:ElGrande even though there is a megasquirt forum I’m still in favor of posting MS related information here to benefit all squirted Spider owners.

I’m sorry to hear that SteinOnkel but that’s all the more reason to stick together.
Have any of you been experiencing issues with data logging? Mine cuts out after a few short minutes and stays off until I start it again.
Also, when you guys have finished your tune what features are you reactivating? I remember being told to turn off fuel overrun, or something similar, while using auto tune but am wondering what else I have forgotten to do or set.

Are you talking about SD Card Datalogging? My ECU decided it had had enough of that and just displays "SD Error" now. Need to try a new card and reformat I think.joelittel wrote:I’m sorry to hear that SteinOnkel but that’s all the more reason to stick together.

Set your accel enrich threshold nice and high for auto-tune. And yes, fuel overrun is a good one to have off (and most likely leave off, I can never get it to not kill the engine or it won't engage at all).
