Is this engine sound normal?

Post by 69Fiat »

I rebuilt my engine, its been started maybe 3 times for a total of 5 minutes or so. The sound is a metal scraping sound or something similar. Like a light grinding maybe. It seems to be more on the exhaust side. I checked the timing belt and it's good. The oil pressure is zero on the gauge but I think its the sending unit. I pulled it and it was failing resistance tests. I couldn't get the manual oil pressure testing unit in the small space so I haven't tested the engine that way quite yet. It sounds like it could be a lack of oil but I checked the cam boxes and oil is in there. So I know it's being pumped up. It could be low pressure but I figured maybe someone with a good ear could help figure it out.

I don't know about your motor but I had to take a couple sea sick pills after looking at your video.
After I recover I'll try to look at it again but I'm not making any promises. :?
OH, and your radiator over flow tank is over filled.

Thanks for the pro tips grandpa grumpypants. The flowtank is lower than the top of the radiator so when trying to get the air bubbles out I sometimes Put put too much in. It happens.

If your having trouble getting the air out, order up one of these. Works great.

Absolutly not !
But the noice seems coming more from the outside of the engine than the engine itself. Something is not correctly screwed ...

water pump?
tensioner bearing?
alternator bearing?

a mechanic's stethoscope from HF or elsewhere is a good tool to track this stuff down.

You are questioning that slight metallic sound in the background? To me it sounds like the thin metal plate between the engine block and the transmission is rubbing against the flywheel. Maybe it got bent when you installed it.
