Ouch... I think you lost that fight, Laser. Can it be fixed?

The bumpers at fault are on the Suburban. DOT has been asked to address this issue with trucks and SUV's that have bumpers set so high that they can't meet up with most automobiles. The problems this creates is even greater in a side impact since the bumpers on those vehicles are higher than the side door beams in cars also so much so that the only protection you end up with would be from a side curtain air bag.

Mercedes was the last one I heard of that was putting a lower section under the SUV bumpers to better mesh with automobiles. You will see that a number of tractor trailer and other roadway heavy trucks are putting lower bumpers on their tractors and trailers to help with this issue.

People who raise their vehicles are many times illegal as some states do have bumper height regulations to minimize cars submarining under them.

Our's had a similar result after hitting the rear of a modern VAN! The Fiat's bumper went under the van's, and the Spider's passenger's headlight and hood were impacted.
It's not just raised vehicles,...check bumper height on just about any new vehicle, and you'll find that it has increased over the years. Fiat bumpers don't match up 'height-wise' with much of anything anymore,...
I can see that lots of front end sheet metal, pass. fender front, and a hood are toast,...radiator too. It looks possible that no major structural damage has occurred to passenger side, behind the crushed headlight. How much damage is there to the engine?
I second the question, can it be fixed? Looks possible,...
I'm so very sorry that this happened to your car,...I know how you feel! I wish you the very best of luck with it! And don't hesitate to ask, if there's anything I can help you with in getting your car fixed. I've been down this road,...

My fault
I just put in a test pipe and was concentrating on engine sound instead of the road
Silver lining
Picked up a 73 in pieces with a rebuilt engine and tranny and all body work and paint done.
Anyone looking for a rebuilt 1600?
Swapping all my 84 parts into the 73.
Anything I should be aware of?

If you are parting out the 84 i would be interested in a few things. Like the center console and side view mirror which are not compatible with a 73

You plan to transplant the interior of the 84 in a 72? Electric windows, mirror that goes true the glass and all.
It won't be plug and play.

Insurance totaled it? Sad to see one that could be repaired just parted out.

Really sorry about the loss.

People have joked that now that I have welded in steel to replace all the Bondo on mine that I need to worry about a similar event so I am driving now with an abundance of caution.

Yes some go to both extremes with low front bumpers and extremely high ones in the rear however most new cars have just a small bumper somewhere behind it all and the entire front end is a plastic cover filled with expanded foam to make up the difference.

My Nissan Leaf is a good match however an Armada is not. DOT has to start better enforcing bumper height regs so front and rears have to be in a set range that meets up regardless of the vehicle.
