Side view mirror 1983

On my 1983 side view mirror, vent mounted, Came undone. Are there any diagrams out there or advice, tips how to get it back on track? Appreciate any advice, 1983 to 1985.5 models. Nothing in my service manual.

I think the most common failure of the 83-85.5 exterior mirrors is the pot metal casting breaks near the swivel bolt. I takes a very skilled white metal welder to weld the parts and not damage the black plastic outer covering. Usually some filing or grinding is required after the weld is completed.

Yikes, Welding pot metal. I am hoping I just knocked it off the toggle cables. It is attached to the window still. Just flopped down. It will be a few weeks until i get a better look at it.

Happened at the end of the day, fellt like the toggle wires came undone and fell off it's track. I dont think the fitting on the window broke.

Hold on to them Orford2004, I may be needing them. Going to be a few weeks until i get back to it. Did you replace them for door mounts?

No, the plastic cover was bad for me. And the replacement don't have control on passenger side, so i switch them from the old.

There is a weak point where the mirror attaches to an indexer, So you can fold the mirror in. Looks fatal, I have some structural epoxy ie: JB Weld. Took it apart and it looks like it will hold. Have to be careful with it. I think it is a rare and expensive part. The welder I know is on sick leave, Maybe when he returns if this doesn't work I will ask him.
