Electrical Rantings!

Post by zachmac »

I just wanted to post here that I just posted three of four segments of a series concerning Fiat Spider electrical basics and ignition switches. I believe I have it all correct and hopefully the posts will be helpful to both owners with original SEPIA and replacement Lada ignition switches as well as just improve basic understanding of how and where from your Spider gets power to various loads.

Again, I am human and I may have errors. If I do please point them out and I will edit the posts accordingly. Finally, if anyone wants a word version of the combined posts please contact me with an off forum email address and I'll send it along. Happy motoring!

I cleaned up my unmolested electrical system in my 79 Spider back in 2001. The only thing that I have had to do in the last 18 years is clean the turn signal sockets in the rear tail lights about once every 9 years, and do the "brown wire fix" way back when. I've had zero problems since. I have electric windows and just recently adjusted the pulleys and tracks so they go up and down like a normal power window. No modifications were needed to the electrical system at all.

And then there were my other Spiders that had molested electrical systems. It took a long time to put everything back to original, clean connections, replace bad components, etc., and they were very reliable thereafter.

Any good tips for the novice and confused are very appreciated. I drew on the expertise of people on this site back in 1999 and 2000. There were some amazing mechanics on here.
