Noisy fuel pump?

Post by RenaissanceMan »

Continuing to sort out issues on my father's '80 Spider... We just got the car running, but from the intake side of the motor we are hearing a pretty significant sound that sounds like an exhaust leak. Can't seem to find a vacuum leak anywhere, but it sounds like it is coming from the the area where the fuel pump is. I have never owned one of these before... Is it possible what we are hearing is chatter from the mechanical fuel pump?

Yes. Fuel pumps are cheap too.

That's odd. I've owned five Spiders and the mechanical pumps have never made any noticeable noise.

I have to agree with spidernut. I've never heard a mechanical fuel pump make noise,...unless it was coming apart!
Electric fuel pumps make a chattering noise,...but that doesn't sound like the problem, due to the location.
Best of luck. Todd.

Are you sure your auxiliary shaft is timed correctly? If that's not the case, the lobe that drives the fuel pump can hit other parts, and that will make some substantial noise...

RRoller123 - the fluttering noise of an electric fuel pump is normal.

I'm assuming yes, but I will dig in with Dad and double-check. Thanks for the reply!
